Contesting Extractivism in Contemporary Indigenous Literature

While “Drill, Baby, Drill” resounds as the current rationale for U.S. (environmental) politics, this lecture draws attention to a different framework for social-ecological relations. Dr. Fackler traces how contemporary Indigenous literatures engage a rich and multifaceted discourse of kinship which helps make Indigenous beliefs and value systems legible to Western audiences. In this way, this cultural imaginary nudges readers toward alternative forms of belonging in and with the more-than-human world and, ultimately, toward more sustainable social and ecological futures.
